I've become addicted to "Fringe," the new series on Fox. It's X Files meets Without a Trace. Or some such blend.

One recent episode featured the following image:

Do you see a duck or a rabbit?

The point of the illustration is to prove that individuals have an active role in interpreting perceptions. While "seeing is believing’ is a commonly held opinion, it's a statement of “naive realism.” We don't just see; we interpret. And those interpretations can change instantly based on mindset.

The illustration can be seen as either aduck or a rabbit, depending upon how an individual focuses upon theimage and how his/her “pattern filters” group the stimuli. When focusing one’s eyes on theleft, the picture seems to be of a duck, but from the right, a rabbit. This interpretive act affects the (view) ... we are not the passivereceivers of sensory data but active participants.

The human brain needs to construct images into ameaningful whole. And that process of intepreting, of images shifting from one perception to another ... I think that's something that some people are better at than others. Some people -- myself included -- are maybe a little too good at it. I think this is part of what fuels my future sight, my ability to vividly see a person's potential manifested in real time in front of me, so much so that it has often eclipsed who they currently are.

While my intuition rarely fails me, I'm becoming inclined to wait it out more frequently. To allow more than just my gut to prove out on a person's abilities, worth, essence.

I hear Coldplay in my head ... maybe I should try "waiting 'til the shine wears off ." ("Lost!" from the album, Viva la Vida)
